EID

Salam. Today is Eid.. Eid mubarak to everyone. I haven't call my mom yet. This can be the best day in your life... we should all be grateful allah bless some days more than others. This is what Sheikh Abdullah is trying to tell us.. that days are not the same in terms of their virtues. Allah bless the first 10 days of zulhijjah for us to take the benefit and to make lots of dua. We need this for our living. LIfe is not easy but with Allah in our hearts, it can be. Whatever comes to us, you will be contented. So there is NO GRIEVE and NO FEAR for all muslims. Theoretically we shouldn't be..but many do not follow the religion well and that is why we see that things are not as they are supposed to be. What a shame? There are many reverts (those who just entered Islam) who are better than the born-muslims. GO BACK TO ISLAM!!! This is the key to success! Believe that in your heart, guys! We are so busy with our worldly ambition that we have so many excuses for everything. May Allah help us and make it easy for us all to do righteous deeds, ameen. ooo Allah! You are most kind most merciful, help me to do righteous deeds and be sincere so that i will do everything to please You and no one else.

May Allah help us to be good righeous people and gather us all in Jannah to meet Him. Ameen.. ya rabbal a'lameen.

PhD o... PhD

I am a 4th year student doing PhD in UK. Life as a PhD student is a bit stressful at times, but i say this not to complaint. I am enjoying the free schedule life after years of going back and forth to work and still, i am not complaining about work. As muslim, we should never complaint.

DISCOVERING KNOWLEDGE

Being a PhD student is a blissful thing. I found one day during my early year of PhD a quotation that i keep until now that really is a concept that everyone should hold on to which is...

“The voyage of discovery is not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.”
Marcel Proust

It is not a hadith but certainly it applies to our discovery of knowledge when we are doing PhD. We all seek knowledge in our own fields. Some approach it with lots of confidence and some do it with anxiety but nevertheless, everyone is searching for this light at the end of the tunnel. That is how everyone describes the voyage of PhD. We are all searching for some novelty in our research work, at least that is the question during the viva that you have to answer to and make sure that you know how to answer it. But at that end of the tunnel, after those 3 or 4 or even 5 years of hard work, do you feel like you are a changed, improved person. But how do you know if you are an improved person?? If you can figure out the novelty in your work, you surely can test whether or not you are an improved person!!!

Have you changed for the better? Have you look at the world with your new eyes? Is your idea more global now and not so rigid to your own culture or to any space confinement that you build yourself. Can you see things in better perspective now. When you judge others, do you still judge them in your own perspective? Are you kinder? Do you think that your choice of words contain more wisdom now that you have sail to that further land of knowledge. Are you more open minded in a way that you can accept people's differences or shortcomings as interesting variables in your experiments? That is why in statistics, we have normal distribution and exponential distribution graph.
Have you ever looked upon your life with these new eyes?

After all these hard work for years, are you able to see more that those habitual patterns and understand how other see differently. I remembered when i was passing through an optometrist shop and decided to have an eye check for fun. Never realize that i need glasses and at last, i went out from the shop with a pair of glasses and suddenly, i feel like it is a whole new world - things are brighter and clearer than before!!

There is another interesting quotation that says...

“The foolish man seeks happiness in the distance, the wise grows it under his feet.”
James Oppenheim

This is so true. When you are doing your PhD, sometimes, you feel so miserable that you thought you can never enjoy your life. Some would be forever homesick and missing home. Some would not even leave their lab because they are so anxious and feel that is the right thing to do - to be focus.

No one can say what is the right thing to do when you are doing PhD. But of course, you can be focus and enjoy life at the same time. People enjoy life differently. So this is the time to find your own self if you haven't find yet. To find yourself is to know your creator. So i really encourage everyone who is doing PhD to be more open with your time. Don't be too rigid. When there is an invitation for knowledge, go for it. Don't just stuck 24 7 at your desk trying to find novelty in your work. If you spend time with Allah, Allah will help you in your work. Who do you think create the universe? If you can't find novelty in that, what can you find? Allah is the greatest scientist. Seek His help. Don't ignore when people invite you for some islamic lecture just because you have to fulfill some due dates?

When you have a new pair of eyes, you see opportunities as they come. Alhamdulillah, Allah open up some peoples heart to knowledge and harden others. Make dua that Allah will not harden our hearts but have trust that when your heart is hardened, there is still hope as Allah give life to the dead and so are these hardened hearts. Allah give parables around us for those who wants to understand.

Back to PhD life... I have gone through alot. Sometimes, i do feel like the test is too much for me but then again, when we have trust, we know that Allah will not test you more that than you can bear. So take it easy. So most of the time, you should always try to look at things differently and relate back to your creator to have that contentment. You really have to develop high inner spirit to keep you on the track. And spend some time with Allah so that in whatever situation you are, you'll be happy.

TRAVELLING

Ever since i was small, i have always wanted to travel. When i was little, people would look at me and said that this kid will travel the world for some reason. When i sleep at night, i like to wonder what others are doing on the other side of the world. I always fancy being able to live far from homeland or doing something different than the normal stuff. Now, being in UK, traveling is not a luxury anymore. It is one of those opportunities that i just grab whenever i can. Traveling is like going back through time.... I love going to places where there there were great histories... of course the best is Mecca and Madina. But in Europe, you can go to Istanbul and visit those great mosques or to Spain, to visit the Al-Hambra. Don't let this opportunity go... Look at what our ancestors has achieved and then, you would be able to appreciate what you have today and strive for more. If you compare to what they have done, you would think that you have done nothing. So it is kind of a motivation for your ownself to tell you that you can do more!!!! (probably!)

KNOW ALLAH

Always, when you are doing your PhD, spend alot of time for Allah and Allah will help you along the way. Your research or findings is so little to what Allah has laid out for you. Look at the sky and see if you can even find any faults! Look at everything .. are there faults. Your car can have lots of faults but not the creation of Allah. If the sun is at fault, we will be in trouble. So who are we to think that our research is so important that we have to neglect our responsibility as His servant. Don't be too arrogant for there is no arrogant people in paradise. If you think you can spend sometime, just listen to the online lectures.. just type "ANWAR AL_AWLAKI LECTURES" and you'll get plenty. He is one of those great scholars who is trying to wake us up from our dreams. So be mindful!!!

SHARING KNOWLEDGE

When you do PhD, it is good if you can share knowledge or anything that you feel can benefit your peers. Life as a PhD student is quite lonely. Sometimes, you will spend days or weeks trying to figure out something and there is no one to turn to not even your own supervisor because he thinks you should be able to do it yourself. We have many PhD students around but we never meet and gather to talk about our research. Just talk about it over lunch but instead, they talk about something that cannot benefit them - dunia! Why not spend time to talk about your research methodology and ask opinion from your friends, exchange ideas or writing style... When someone having their viva, they never tell you what was asked by the examiner.. they keep it to themselves or to one of two close friends. Why not share it with a group. Some even do not tell others that they are going for viva... don't we need dua from triends??? One thing i got from Sheikh Abdullah is that to be in wudu' when you are in difficulty.. so when you are entering the viva room, go with your wudu'. Insya'Allah, Allah will be helping you and read that dua... i can't remember now which ayat but i will put it here later on....insya'Allah.

As for writing, i believe everyone should use Latex. It is a powerful free distribution software for thesis writing. I want to teach others to use it because it has helped me so much.. i am using it now with my macbook and using BibDesk to organize your bibliograpy is so easy. I am thinking if one day, after i submit my thesis, i want to open up a class on Latex.. if anyone is interested, they can come and we can have a one day workshop on Latex, insya'Allah. Right now, my hands are full.

i should be going back to my work now.. so i'll continue writing, insya'Allah.

Today I want to talk about the lecture by S.Abdullah Yassin which i attended last Monday. As usual, Sheikh Abdullah was very good at interpreting the Al Quran. People like him is blessed by the knowledge which Allah give to only selected few. But that doesn't mean that we shouldn't strive for such. Back to the lecture, we continued with Surah Al-Hadeed(the iron). This surah is magical and one needs to contemplate alot for whatever Allah has sent down into this surah. Allah has given light to this world and this light is Rasulullah s.a.w. He is the light in many sense and one of them is the guidance that he showed us. And many came towards this light and some are still in total darkness. Those whose heart was sealed or harden like the jews, they are those people who would not be able to receive this light. And if we follow this light, in the hereafter, when everyone else is saying "nafsi nafsi" (worrying about their ownselves), only Rasulullah will not be thinking about himself but he will gather his ummah and intercede for us. Once, his companion asked how he would recognize his ummah when the entire humanity gathers, he answered that they will be like the white spot on a black cow. This is due to our wudu' (ablution). So it is important for us to be recognized or accepted as his ummah.

What should we do to be recognized by the prophet Muhammad s.a.w.?
We need to be close to him. How? We need to love him and how do we love someone if we don't know him. We have to:
(1) study about him.. his seerah (path of life)
(2) send alot of salawat to him
(3) be like him... best conduct! We have to be kind and in the best of conduct at all times. We don't want to put people off from being muslim just when people look at our behaviour.

Talk about behavior, how many muslims are truly muslims? We have to be truthful in our speech and action. For men, they have to be kind to their wives before they are kind to others. One hadith (saying of prophet Muhammad s.a.w.) said that the best among you is the one who is kind to his wife.. and i am the best with my wife.
